When Tomorrow Feels Unreal

Sometimes the future does not feel like something you can picture.

People may talk about next week, next month, goals, plans, appointments, changes, healing, and you may feel like they are speaking from another room. You can understand the words, but they do not reach the part of you that is tired right now.

That can be frightening. Not always loud. Sometimes just quiet and flat. Like tomorrow technically exists, but you cannot feel yourself inside it.

When depression makes the future feel far away, being told to “think positive” can feel almost insulting. It asks you to stand in a place you cannot reach and then blames you for not standing there.

You do not have to feel hopeful about your whole life before you take care of the next hour. You do not have to imagine a bright future on command. You do not have to turn pain into a lesson, a plan, or a story that makes sense to someone else.

Sometimes the work is smaller than hope. Sometimes it is staying near enough to the next few minutes that you do not have to carry forever all at once.

If tomorrow feels unreal, shrink the timeline. Not because tomorrow does not matter, but because your mind may not be able to hold it right now.

Instead of asking, “How do I get through life?” ask, “What is the next safe hour asking for?” Instead of asking, “How do I fix this?” ask, “What would make the next ten minutes less dangerous, less lonely, or less heavy?”

This is not giving up on the future. It is refusing to let the size of the future crush the part of you that is still here.

Choose one small anchor between now and later. It does not need to be meaningful. It only needs to give your mind a place to land.

  • Put water beside you and take a few drinks before the next hour ends.
  • Text someone, “Can you check on me later?”
  • Move to a safer room or a more visible place.
  • Pick one ordinary thing to do before sleep: charge your phone, change clothes, brush your teeth, or turn on a light.
  • Write one sentence: “I do not have to solve tomorrow tonight.”

If tomorrow feels too far away, do not force yourself to reach it in your mind. Stay with the next piece of time you can actually touch.

Let this be enough for right now: I do not have to feel the whole future. I only have to make the next stretch safer.
