Siblings have access to versions of each other that adults often never see.
You know what their footsteps sound like when they are angry.
You know which “leave me alone” actually means leave me alone and which one means please ask again.
You may notice something is wrong before a parent does.
That does not automatically make you responsible for fixing it.
Being close can make the boundary blurry
If your sibling has anxiety, depression or another mental health condition, you might start adjusting everything around them.
You cover for them.
Make excuses.
Check whether they ate.
Stay awake because you are worried.
Skip your own plans because you do not want to leave them alone.
You can understand anxiety disorders and still recognize that you cannot become the treatment plan.
Your job is connection, not clinical care
You can say:
“Want to sit in my room?”
“Do you want me to come with you when you tell Mom?”
“I noticed you haven’t been yourself.”
“I care about you.”
You do not need to decide what diagnosis they have.
You do not need to monitor them every minute.
You do not need to keep dangerous secrets.
Know when to get an adult
If your sibling says they want to die, is self-harming, is being abused, is dangerously intoxicated or you think they cannot stay safe, tell an adult.
Even if they make you promise not to.
Even if they are furious.
Safety is bigger than the promise.
A parent, guardian, counselor, teacher, coach, doctor or another trusted adult needs to take over the adult part.
Do not let the whole family quietly promote you
Sometimes families start relying on the “responsible” sibling because it is convenient.
You become transportation, homework help, emotional support and crisis management.
This can happen especially when a parent is struggling too.
Helping your family is normal.
Becoming a substitute parent is something else.
If that is happening, tell another adult what your days actually look like.
You are allowed to be annoyed
This matters.
You can love your sibling and be angry that their needs affect everything.
You can feel jealous of the attention they receive.
You can want one evening where nobody discusses mental health.
Those feelings do not make you cruel.
They make you a person inside the same difficult situation.
Keep the sibling relationship if you can
Watch something stupid together.
Argue about music.
Send memes.
Be siblings.
Mental health can take up a lot of space in a family.
It should not be allowed to take every piece of the relationship too.
