Postpartum mental health FAQs

Are “baby blues” the same as postpartum depression?

No. Short-lived mood changes are common after birth, while postpartum depression is more persistent and disruptive.

Can postpartum anxiety be severe even without depression?

Yes. Anxiety, panic, OCD symptoms, and trauma responses can occur during the perinatal period with or without depression.

Do intrusive thoughts mean I will hurt my baby?

Not necessarily. Unwanted intrusive thoughts can occur in anxiety and OCD. Intent, loss of control, psychosis, or inability to maintain safety require urgent evaluation.

Can partners experience postpartum mental-health problems too?

Yes. Partners can experience depression, anxiety, sleep disruption, trauma, and adjustment difficulties after a baby arrives.
