Naming your chapter

Project Semicolon Chapter Naming Guidelines
Project Semicolon chapters are local, community-led extensions of our mission — each uniquely grounded in the neighborhoods and communities they serve. To maintain consistency and clarity across our global network, all chapters follow a shared naming convention that highlights their local identity while honoring the broader movement.

Naming Format
All chapter names must follow this format:
Project Semicolon [Local Area]
The local area should refer to the specific city, town, neighborhood, street, landmark, or defined community your chapter will serve.

Examples:

  • Project Semicolon Denver

  • Project Semicolon East Harlem

  • Project Semicolon Main Street

  • Project Semicolon Oceanview

This helps community members instantly recognize the chapter’s geographic focus, builds trust, and keeps the naming structure consistent across the organization.

What You Can’t Use in a Chapter Name
To protect the integrity of our brand and reduce confusion, chapter names may not be based on:

  • Country names (e.g., Project Semicolon Canada)

  • States or provinces (e.g., Project Semicolon Texas)

  • Large regions (e.g., Project Semicolon Pacific Northwest)

  • Location nicknames (e.g., Project Semicolon The Big Easy)

  • Historic or former city names

  • Buildings, museums, or commercial properties

  • Brand names, proprietary developments, or organizations

  • Corporations, nonprofits, or government agencies

Choosing a Name That Fits
Your chapter name should reflect the specific local community your group aims to engage. When choosing a name, consider using:

  • A city or town name

  • A neighborhood or district

  • A main street, public park, river, lake, or known landmark

  • A distinct area that people in your city recognize as a shared space

Keep it clear, local, and relevant. The more specific your name, the easier it is for your community to find you and connect with your work.

Chapters Based at Schools or Universities
If your chapter is based at a school, college, or university, you may name it after that institution.

Examples:

  • Project Semicolon UCLA

  • Project Semicolon Lincoln High

  • Project Semicolon State College

We encourage school-based chapters to work in collaboration with school counselors, wellness coordinators, or student affairs offices to maximize impact and ensure long-term sustainability.

Additional Notes

  • Chapter names are subject to review and approval by the Project Semicolon team.

  • If two chapters request similar names in the same region, we may request a slight variation to avoid confusion.

  • Chapters are encouraged to choose a name that reflects their primary area of outreach, even if they plan to serve a broader audience over time.
