When Your Body Needs Medical Support Now

If you feel medically unsafe, seek urgent medical care or emergency help now. This includes fainting, chest pain, trouble breathing, confusion, seizures, severe weakness, blood in vomit or stool, severe dehydration, repeated vomiting, heart racing or feeling irregular, or being unable to keep food or fluids down.

Food and body distress can become physically dangerous, even when part of you says it is not serious enough yet.

You may be used to pushing through dizziness, weakness, stomach pain, restriction, purging, dehydration, exhaustion, or feeling disconnected from your body. You may tell yourself you are fine because you can still stand, work, answer messages, or look “normal” from the outside.

But looking functional does not always mean your body is safe.

Eating disorders and disordered eating patterns can affect the heart, digestion, hydration, electrolytes, temperature regulation, concentration, mood, and energy. You do not have to understand every medical detail to take your body seriously.

If your body is sending warning signs, the next step is not to wait until you feel deserving of care. The next step is to get support before the risk grows.

Medical support is not a punishment. It is not proof that you failed. It is care for a body that may be under more strain than you can see.

Shame may tell you to hide symptoms, minimize what is happening, or wait until things are worse. It may tell you that you will be judged, not believed, or treated like you caused this and therefore should handle it alone.

But a medical warning sign does not need to pass a shame test before it matters.

If you are scared to explain, keep it simple: “I am struggling with eating and I am having symptoms that worry me.” That is enough to start the conversation.

Choose the step that matches the level of risk.

  • If symptoms feel urgent or dangerous, call emergency services or go to urgent/emergency care.
  • If you have chest pain, fainting, confusion, seizures, trouble breathing, severe weakness, repeated vomiting, or signs of severe dehydration, seek urgent help now.
  • If you are restricting, purging, using laxatives or diuretics, or rapidly changing food intake, contact a medical professional for support.
  • If you are afraid to go alone, ask someone to come with you or stay on the phone while you seek care.
  • If you do not know what to say, write one sentence before you call or arrive.

You do not have to wait until you are ready to recover from everything before you protect your body today.

Let this be enough for right now: my body’s warning signs matter. Medical support is care, not punishment.
